Interview With Leigh Bennett, Author of "Flirting With Magick" Series

Leigh Bennett joins us at the Between Boyfriends blog to talk about her writing, including her upcoming novel in the Flirting with Magick series (check back soon for a book spotlight).

Author Interview

Q. Did you always want to be a writer? If not what did you want to be?

A. I had actually grown up wanting to be an actor. I loved drama classes and enjoyed getting into character. It’s great that writing lets me do the same thing.

Q. What is the name of your latest book? Can you summarize in fewer than 75 words?

A. It’s called Flirting with Magick. It’s about a woman who tries her luck finding a new love after her boyfriend breaks her heart, by performing a love spell. Not long after she meets a sexy musician, becomes more than friends with a cute work colleague, and on top of that, her ex-boyfriend returns. Of course the road to true love never runs smoothly.

Q. What inspired your book?

A. I had written a short story beforehand about the same character performing a spell for a career change. After that, the idea for the other characters, the musician and the colleague came from my previous experiences of working in various industries, and seeing bands, (just the idea, they weren’t based on real people) and I thought I’d expand on the spell idea to create a sexy and romantic story. The setting was inspired by my inner city home in my early twenties.

Q. Do you have another job besides writing?

A. I’m a stay at home mother.

Q. What can fans expect to see from you in the future?

A. I’m currently writing the next in the Flirting with Magick series, Winter Park, which has to do with a haunted apartment. I’m also working on a YA/Urban Fantasy story about faeries.

Q. Do you have people who read your work before you publish?

A. Always. I couldn’t do without them. And my book has improved so much since that first draft, with their help.

Q. What is your favorite thing to do besides writing?

A. Reading. I also love just kicking back on the couch watching movies. And cooking.

Q. Who is your favorite author(s)?

A. Marian Keyes. Stephen King, Shirley Jackson and Susan Hill.

Q. If authors went out together on tours like bands, who would you want to open for?

A. Ultimately, as above, but probably because of my current genre, Marian Keyes and Sophie Kinsella :)

Q. How much of yourself and people you are close to are in your characters?

A. My main character Abby, is possibly a younger but more sarcastic and uncensored version of me. I don’t think there is really much of the other characters in anyone I know. A couple of the male characters might have one or two of my husband’s traits but overall, all made up.

Q. What advice do you have for someone just starting out?

A.  The one thing I wished I had done sooner was find other writers to talk to, look to for advice and gain support. I was on my own for so long and when I finally met, networked and got to know other writers it was amazing how much more I could do with my work and how much more confident I got. I seriously don’t think I would be releasing soon if not for that extra support and encouragement.

Leigh Bennett's Favorite Quotes from Flirting with Magick

  1. I snuck a look at his profile - so familiar but still so depressingly out of reach. What if this was all a misunderstanding and I made a complete idiot of myself? He said we were friends, but what if that was really all?
  2. As our eyes met and my heart skipped a beat, the previous night’s spell fast tracked its way through my head. Could it be working this quickly? Could it be him? I held my breath, unsure of what to do or what his next move was, but not wanting to spoil the moment.
  3. "...You should be with someone who wants you because they can’t fucking live without you. That's what you deserve."
